The
systems found within virtually all manufacturing
facilities today, such as MRP, FMEA, Health & Safety, or
Environmental Compliance systems, are special-purpose
systems that were designed to meet a specific need.
They were not designed to communicate with other
applications. However, many workers need, but have no
access to, at least portions of the information in all
these systems. In particular, the actions of the
operators on the plant floor determine in large part
whether the manufacturer meets its goals, yet these very
